Master of Dental Surgery in Pediatric Dentistry

This course will provide an opportunity for students to advance their understanding of research through critical exploration of research language, ethics, and approaches. The course introduces the language of research, ethical principles and challenges, and the elements of the research process within quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches. Participants will use these theoretical underpinnings to begin to critically review literature relevant to their field of interests and determine how research findings are useful in forming their understanding of their clinical work and patient care.

This course covers evidence-based knowledge of the major fundamental aspects of clinical pediatric dentistry; which will include the following topics during this semester: examination of the child patient, caries diagnosis and risk assessment, treatment planning, preventive therapy, and introduction to restorative therapy. It aims to familiarize students with the scope of the specialty of pediatric dentistry and ensure they have the basic knowledge and technical skills to proceed with the required didactic and clinical aspects of the program.

This course covers evidence-based knowledge of the major aspects of clinical pediatric dentistry related to behavior management, pain control in pediatric dentistry and developmental dental anomalies.

This course is a continuation of Advanced Clinical Science I and covers evidence-based knowledge of other major aspects of clinical pediatric dentistry; which here includes: restorative therapy, pulp therapy and pediatric endodontics, prosthodontics and extraction in children.

The first-year clinical training in pediatric dentistry is registered as two separate courses for the purpose of registration, and marking system, but it is a spectrum of continuous objectives that guide you through the learning curve in Clinical Pediatric Dentistry which should make the student eligible to sit the Emirati Dental Board in Pediatric Dentistry examination. The course covers evidence-based practice of major aspects of clinical pediatric dentistry; which includes: examination of the child patient, caries diagnosis and risk assessment, treatment planning, preventive therapy, restorative therapy, pulp therapy, and extraction. Students are expected to enhance their skills in clinical pediatric dentistry, be able to obtain clinical records, and present clinical cases both orally and in hard-copy and back-up their treatment based on the literature. Students spend the first year as follows: 2 semesters in the Pediatric Dentistry Clinics and Pediatric Dental Surgery section in the Hospital, 2 weeks in in Pediatrics rotation at the UHS, 1 month (4 weeks) at the UHS for anesthetic rotation, and 2 weeks in the Emergency Department at the UHS.

Biostatistics course provides an introduction to selected important topics in biostatistics concepts and reasoning. This course represents an introduction to the field and provides a survey of data and data types. Specific topics include tools for describing central tendency and variability in data; methods for performing inference on population means and proportions via sample data; statistical hypothesis testing and its application to group comparisons; issues of power and sample size in study designs; and random sample and other study types. While there are some formulae and computational elements to the course, the emphasis is on interpretation and concepts. This course shall strengthen students’ preparation in their research proposal in second year of the program.

In this course, students are expected to search for a suitable research topic and identify a suitable supervisor to take them through the research project. They shall be guided to perform a literature survey and identify key areas and research gaps in a particular clinical or science area. The course enables students to generate research hypothesis and further introduce them to write a research proposal. They will also learn to request for relevant human ethics and animal ethics approval and perform a preliminary research proposal presentation.

This course covers the developing occlusion and interceptive orthodontics in children. It enables the pediatric dentist to understand types of malocclusions that will benefit from early orthodontic treatment to prevent dental injuries, psychosocial problems, or unwanted remodeling changes during the mixed dentition period prior to development of the early permanent dentition.

This course covers the aspects of growth and development of the human body and in particular craniofacial development as an integral part of pediatric dentistry. It deals with understanding the normal stages of development, proper diagnosis of dental anomalies, and proper timing and methods of management.

In this course, students shall organize and prepare their research logistics, begin their pilot study, or validate their questionnaire or run laboratory test to optimize their methods; or begin collecting data either in field work or laboratory experiments. They should ensure that they already have their human or animal ethics approval in place, or they may be needed to provide more information to satisfy the committee to get their projects approved. Project supervisors shall follow their research activities very closely.

This course covers the detailed knowledge of medical conditions encountered in children in pediatric dentistry. It includes medical aspects, dental aspects, and management of children with special needs in such a way that both hospital dentistry and treatment of medically compromised patients can be performed at a high competency. The course deals with integration of medical and dental knowledge at an advanced level to be applied into clinical hospital dental practice.

This course deals with detailed knowledge about oral diagnosis, oral medicine, oral pathology and radiology of soft and hard tissue lesions in children and adolescents in pediatric dentistry. It will also highlight the management of common oral diseases in infants, children and adolescents, in addition to aspects related to hospital dentistry for pediatric dental patients and presented according to relevant and recent literature.

The second-year clinical training in pediatric dentistry is registered as two separate courses for the purpose of registration, and marking system, but it is a spectrum of continuous objectives that guide you through the learning curve in Clinical Pediatric Dentistry which should make the student eligible to sit the Emirati Dental Board in Pediatric Dentistry examination.

This course shall concentrate on research activity implementation, with emphasis on data collection and tabulation of preliminary results.

This course is a continuation of the general pedatrics course and covers other medical conditions encountered in children in pediatric dentistry. It includes medical aspects, dental aspects, and management of children with special needs in such a way that both hospital dentistry and treatment of medically compromised patients can be performed at a high competency. The course deals with integration of medical and dental knowledge at an advanced level to be applied into clinical hospital dental practice along with their clinical pediatrics hospital rotations done in their clinical courses.

This course will cover the diagnosis and clinical management of dental traumatic injuries to the teeth and their supporting structures in children and adolescents. The course includes all aspects of dental traumatology including introduction to facial trauma that are necessary for a pediatric dentist to perform emergency and interim care in addition to dealing with long term planning of future needs through team management of complex cases in the growing child.

The second-year clinical training in pediatric dentistry is registered as two separate courses for the purpose of registration, and marking system, but it is a spectrum of continuous objectives that guide you through the learning curve in Clinical Pediatric Dentistry which should make the student eligible to sit the Emirati Dental Board in Pediatric Dentistry examination.

This course in research supports the students in analyzing their research results and writing-up their dissertation. They revisit their knowledge in biostatistics and apply relevant formulas/ statistical methods to evaluate and validate their research findings.

This course is intended as a final consolidation of information in the specialty of pediatric dentistry to ensure students’ readiness to work as independent competent specialists and to prepare those planning to sit for specialty exams in the field such as the Emirati Board or UK Membership Examination in Pediatric Dentistry.

The third-year clinical training in pediatric dentistry is registered as two separate courses for the purpose of registration, and marking system, but it is a spectrum of continuous objectives that guide you through the learning curve in Clinical Pediatric Dentistry which should make the student eligible to sit the Emirati Dental Board in Pediatric Dentistry examination.

This final course in research is for thesis submission and defense.

This course is intended as a continuation of the previous course as a final consolidation of information in the specialty of pediatric dentistry to ensure students’ readiness to work as independent competent specialists and to prepare those planning to sit for specialty exams in the field such as the Emirati Board or UK Membership Examination in Pediatric Dentistry.
