About This Programme

The Master of Dental Surgery in Endodontics (MDS-EN) provides the trainee with a broad academic background in biomedical sciences, non-surgical and surgical endodontic principles, in the diagnosis and management of medically compromised and non-compromised patients, fundamental knowledge, principles and clinical skills in the treatment of pulpal and periapical diseases. The growing demand for qualified Endodontists in the United Arab Emirates and the Gulf region warrants designing a post-graduate program at the level of Master's degree. The College of Dental Medicine at the University of Sharjah is at a strategic position to offer this program, which is perceived as highly needed to manage root canal treatment requiring patients with pulpal and periapical diseases and trauma patients which dentally injured. The Master of Dental Surgery in Endodontics program is committed to the pursuit of excellence in clinical skills, research and evidence-based practice and community engagement that would be able to provide competent professional human resource development in healthcare for the UAE that fit the social and cultural needs of the people to build a healthy society. Endodontic Sciences
Many aspects that are important for cognitive skills and critical thinking will be covered in the program including Advanced Biology of the Dental Pulp for the Endodontist, Surgical Endodontics, Advanced Root Canal preparation and Obturation Techniques, Pulp and Periapical Pathology, Endodontic Microbiology, Regenerative Endodontics, Geriatric Endodontics, Endo-Perio Relations, Laser Use in Endodontics, Pulp Biology, Pharmacology & Medicine in Clinical Endodontics, Retreatment Methodologies, Procedural Errors & Management in Endodontics, Post-Endodontic Restorations and Imaging Techniques in Endodontics.
Seminar in Endodontics
Students will learn cutting-edge information from the literature and will be able to review and correlate basic and endodontic science with clinical applications. Students will link didactic concepts with practice and clinics based on contemporary and updated sources and be able to discuss the information and knowledge provided under the frame of the seminar sessions. During the seminar sessions where the class meets with the instructor, critical thinking is encouraged by reviewing in detail and analyzing the study designs, methods, and materials along with the discussion and conclusion sections.
Research
Courses related to research (Investigation Leading to Thesis (I-II) and Research Projects (I-IV) are important to find out a research topic, which leads students to research and complete their thesis during the program and mentoring the students in the field of research towards the thesis. These courses are designed to introduce graduate students to critical thinking, research methodology related to their research topic, and evidence-based practice skills. Topics include basic assumptions and concepts of evidence-based practice, clinical and biomedical research, writing skills, and critical thinking. They also take courses related to research methodology and biostatistics. In the last semester, they attend courses related to evaluation of the cases during the program and research presentation.
Current Literature Review
These courses provide exposure to contemporary and cutting-edge, as well as current scientific literature in various subject areas associated with endodontics as well as related sciences. Also, time to time old and historically important literature will be reviewed related to the topics as essential and core literature. Periodic and critical abstracting of this literature is accomplished by seminar attendees in order to maintain a database of condensed, topic-oriented summaries. The knowledge of current professional literature is essential for its evidence-based value and helps to develop theoretical and practical patient management skills of the candidates. This course deals with literature review in Endodontics and related fields.
Case Presentation and Treatment Planning
In these courses, selected endodontic cases (at the beginning) and treatment plans of patients will be presented by the candidates and critiqued by the group. Later, every case of the students will be reviewed throughout the 6 semesters of the program, including the follow-ups. The case presentations will help demonstrate acquired skills and knowledge in all phases of history taking, examination, consultation, and diagnosis, leading up to and including treatment planning. Also, the results and outcomes of the cases completed will be shown by the students and discussed. In the last year, students will present cases with multidisciplinary treatment approach.
Pre-Clinical and Clinical Endodontics
In these courses, students will be exposed to simple and complex cases within the scopes of the current best practices in endodontic examinations, diagnosis, treatment plan, and management. Training will graduate endodontists who are competent, leader, and innovative. Throughout the program, students acquire skills in teaching undergraduate students in the preclinical and clinical activities.

Entry Requirements

Academic: • A BDS degree from University of Sharjah or an equivalent qualification, with a GPA of 3.0 or above. Candidates with a GPA between 2.5 and 2.9 may be given consideration. • A minimum of one-year post qualification work experience • English Language requirements: A minimum of 550 on paper-based TOEFL or 6.0 on IELTS or its equivalence. • Applicants must attend an interview session and may be required to sit for a written and/or practical test. Admission requirements for master programs: • The student must hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent from a recognized university with a CGPA of 3.00 out of 4.00. • Students with a CGPA between 2.5 and 2.99 may be admitted conditionally. • The degree must be in a major that qualifies the student to study the master's program. • Students must meet the English language proficiency requirement. • Attachment of ‘no objection of study certificate’ from the authorities responsible for national service for male Emirati students (ages from 18 to 30 years old). • Attachment of a letter of study approval from the Kuwait Embassy Cultural Office for Kuwaiti students only. • Attachment of People of Determination card (if applicable). • In case the student works in a certain place, please attach a letter from the employer stating that the student is working for this agency. • For individuals with foreign qualifications, it is necessary to provide a Certificate of Equivalency.

English: For programs taught in English, a score of 550 in TOEFL (ITP) (or its equivalence), or 6 in IELTS must be obtained. Native English speakers are exempt from the English proficiency requirement if the language of instruction for their undergraduate studies was English. Additionally, students who graduated from academic institutions where English is used as the primary medium of instruction for bachelor’s studies are also exempt. Equivalent scores (EmSAT / paper-based TOEFL ITP / IELTS academic): 950-1075 / 450 / 4.5; 1100-1225 / 500 / 5.0; 1250-1375 / 530 / 5.5; 1400-1525 / 550 / 6.0. The paper-based TOEFL ITP is offered only by the University of Sharjah, AMIDEAST Dubai, and Abu Dhabi head offices. The UoS reserves the right to require students to attend an interview in the Languages Institute. Students may be required to take a further in-house test to ensure their scores are consistent with their English Language proficiency.

Special admission requirements for master’s in dental medicine programs: 1. Having a minimum of one-year work experience, after successfully completing the internship or its foreign equivalent. 2. Applicants may be requested to attend an interview session and may be required to sit for a written and/or practical test. 3. Accepted students must provide at the beginning of the program, proof of “resident” license from the Ministry of Health, or at least “in process” application.
