About New York University Abu Dhabi

New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) is a highly selective liberal arts and research university on Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi, and one of the three degree-granting portal campuses of New York University's global network, alongside New York and Shanghai. Opened in 2010, NYUAD awards the New York University degree, a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science, and is licensed by the UAE Ministry of Education and accredited through NYU by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Students come from more than 115 countries into a fully residential campus community with an average class size of about 14. The academic experience combines a signature Core Curriculum, a required senior Capstone project, and the chance to study away across NYU's worldwide network of campuses and academic centres. Admission is need-blind and the university meets the full demonstrated financial need of admitted students through grants rather than loans. Alongside its undergraduate majors across the arts and humanities, sciences, social sciences and engineering, NYUAD offers selected master's programmes, fully funded PhD study through NYU's Global PhD Student Fellowship, and MBA and Executive MBA study through Stern at NYUAD.

Admissions

Admissions & entry requirements

NYU Abu Dhabi is one of the most selective universities in the world, admitting undergraduates once a year for September entry through a holistic, two-step process. Applications are made through the Common Application and are reviewed for academic excellence, meaningful extracurricular involvement, character, and a commitment to a global, interconnected community. The most competitive applicants are then invited to Candidate Weekend, the final stage of selection. Admission is need-blind for all applicants, including international students.

01

Submit the Common Application

Apply through commonapp.org and pay the USD 85 application fee (fee waivers are available). NYU Abu Dhabi is one of NYU's three portal campuses on the Common App.

02

Send Supporting Materials

Your school submits the Common App School Report and transcripts. Provide one letter of recommendation (it does not have to be from a teacher) and complete the Self-reported Transcript and Academic Record System (STARS).

03

Testing (Optional) and English Proficiency

Standardized testing is optional. Applicants whose native language is not English submit English proficiency results, unless they have studied in an English-only curriculum for three years.

04

Apply for Financial Aid

To be considered for need-based aid, submit the CSS Profile (NYU code 2785) by the financial-aid deadline for your decision plan.

05

Candidate Weekend (by invitation)

The most competitive applicants are invited to Candidate Weekend, the second and final step of selection, experiencing student life on the Saadiyat Island campus before final decisions.

Entry requirements by level

Undergraduate
Academic

NYU Abu Dhabi practises holistic admission and does not publish fixed grade cut-offs. The committee looks for outstanding academic achievement in a demanding secondary curriculum (for example strong A Levels, a high IB Diploma score, AP results, or the equivalent national qualification), alongside sustained and meaningful extracurricular involvement, character, and a commitment to a global community. Admission is among the most selective in the world.

English

Applicants whose native language is not English submit English proficiency results (such as TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo), unless they have studied in a curriculum where English is the sole language of instruction for three years before applying. NYU Abu Dhabi does not publish a fixed minimum score for undergraduate admission; the review is holistic.

Notes

Common Application with one letter of recommendation (not required to be from a teacher), the STARS self-reported academic record, an optional supplemental essay, and optional standardized tests. The most competitive applicants are invited to Candidate Weekend as the final step of selection.

Graduate (Masters and MBA)
Academic

A strong bachelor's degree from a recognised institution in a relevant field. Master's options include the MFA in Art and Media and the MSc in Interdisciplinary Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, plus the MBA and Executive MBA offered by Stern at NYU Abu Dhabi.

English

Proof of English proficiency is required where applicable. The MFA in Art and Media publishes minimums of IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 90, or Duolingo 120; other programmes confirm their requirements at application.

Notes

Online application with official transcripts, a statement of purpose, a CV, and letters of recommendation.

Doctoral (PhD)
Academic

PhD study runs through the NYU Global PhD Student Fellowship: applicants apply through the relevant NYU New York school (GSAS, Steinhardt or Tandon) and select NYU Abu Dhabi as their research site. Engineering fellowships require a relevant master's degree before enrolling; other fields generally admit from a strong bachelor's degree. A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 is required to maintain funding.

English

Proof of English proficiency is required where applicable, per the NYU school of application.

Notes

Online application with official transcripts, a statement of purpose, a CV, and letters of recommendation. The fellowship is fully funded, covering tuition, a stipend, and campus accommodation in Abu Dhabi.
