Digital Media and Communications BA
About This Programme
The BA Digital Media and Communications at the University of Birmingham Dubai is a three-year, full-time degree in how people communicate on- and offline and how media and digital technologies are used in different cultures and contexts. It balances classroom study with practical, hands-on creative learning, taught through lectures, seminars and workshops. The programme covers project leadership, globalised media and cross-cultural awareness, so that graduates can carry their expertise across sectors and countries, and builds skills in research, professional communication, media and content creation. Students develop professional practice alongside academic study, including a placement with a local partner organisation in the heritage, social enterprise or creative arts sector, drawing on the growing media, cultural and creative industries of Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

What You'll Study
Students learn with academics from the UK and Dubai in small classes and personalised one-to-one sessions with their tutor, through lectures, small-group tutorials, workshops, presentations, independent study and peer learning. Every assessment has a formative stage with feedback before the module's summative assessment. Contact hours vary from week to week with the modules taken, averaging about 12 hours of taught contact time a week in each year, across lectures, seminars, workshops, group discussions and presentations. Staff are also available outside these times for individual meetings and informal supervision. Assessment varies by module and can include coursework such as essays, group and individual presentations, and exams; students are told at the start of each module how and when they will be assessed. Feedback on each assessment is given within three weeks, including on exams, with particularly detailed feedback to help anyone who fails an exam prepare for the next.

The degree prepares graduates for roles in sectors such as advocacy, the creative arts, journalism, media, marketing and publishing. The University reports that it was the top choice of the UK's major graduate employers in The Graduate Market 2025 report, and second among the UK universities most targeted by leading graduate employers in High Fliers' Graduate Market 2026 report.
