About This Programme

The MSc Cyber Security at the University of Birmingham Dubai prepares graduates with a computing background to keep systems safe and help organisations prevent cyber attacks, for roles such as cybersecurity consultant, secure software engineer and IT security manager. It runs for 12 months full-time or two years part-time, starting in January or September. Students learn to design and build systems that resist security threats, with expertise in cryptography, network security, machine learning, digital forensics, penetration testing, malware analysis and reverse engineering. The first semester focuses on securing software and hardware, network defence through cryptography and secure communication, and machine learning; the second on designing and managing secure systems, data protection and risk assessment, investigating breaches, and secure mobile systems. A summer project applies this to a significant cybersecurity challenge, sometimes with industry collaboration.

What You'll Study

The MSc combines lectures on the latest developments, tutorials with tailored guidance and feedback, workshops, independent study, practical assignments, labs, case studies and real-world scenarios, and project work that builds independence for professional practice. Assessment combines group projects, individual continuous assessment and written exams. The summer project can be based on staff suggestions or students' own ideas, and may involve interdisciplinary co-supervision or collaboration with industry. Classes combine evenings and weekends to suit working professionals as well as full-time students. The draft full-time timetable has teaching on one or two evenings a week from 18:00 to 21:00 and on Saturdays from 09:00 to 17:00 (the day varies by module), with each module taught over 11 weeks in Semester 1 and 12 weeks in Semester 2; part-time students attend the same sessions for the modules they take. The MSc leads to roles in secure software development, cybersecurity consultancy, network security engineering, cybersecurity analysis, digital forensics and penetration testing, or to PhD research, at technology firms, global IT companies, investment and retail banks and telecommunications providers; the University names Deloitte, Accenture, IBM, Google and PwC. Accreditation & Professional Recognition

Accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and listed as Active on the Commission for Academic Accreditation register as the Master of Science in Cyber Security; the register also lists a Postgraduate Diploma and a Postgraduate Certificate in Cyber Security as Active. The course page notes that the equivalent UK programme is GCHQ accredited; it does not state that the Dubai programme is.
