Artificial Intelligence (AI) PhD
About This Programme
The PhD in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Birmingham Dubai is a research degree, typically three years full-time or six years part-time, that builds the theoretical and applied knowledge and skills in the most in-demand areas of AI for careers in academia, industry or government. Candidates either propose their own line of research or join ongoing research, working in small teams in close collaboration with research groups at the Birmingham home campus. The School of Computer Science in Dubai pursues research in machine learning and artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and networks and security, and aims for positive impact on society through collaboration with industry and government, commercialisation and a wide participation programme. Its work is regularly presented at international conferences and in journals, and doctoral researchers present their own work on an international stage.
Course Highlights
- The University's School of Computer Science is ranked 3rd among UK universities in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF), as stated on the course page.
- Opportunities to attend global conferences and present research internationally.
- Small research teams in Dubai working closely with research groups at the Birmingham home campus.
- A diverse, inclusive research community spanning computer science and AI, with Dubai research themes in machine learning and AI, natural language processing, and networks and security.

What You'll Study
Doctoral researchers are trained in research skills and carry out their own research around regular meetings with their supervisors and thesis groups, with one-to-one supervision giving tailored guidance and feedback. Seminars encourage independent problem-solving and enquiry-based learning, practical assignments and laboratory work put theory into practice, and project work builds critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, time management and communication. Progress is assessed periodically by the Research Students Monitoring Group. Applicants can suggest one or two potential supervisors from the staff in Dubai or at the Edgbaston campus; this is not essential, and the PhD programme co-directors can review a proposal and choose the best supervisory team. The PhD AI Lead listed on the course page is Dr Panagiotis Andriotis, Lecturer in the School of Computer Science.
Year 1
With the supervisors, define the structure of the project, take research methods and other training, begin reviewing the scientific literature and set the scope of the work. Depending on the project, this can involve colleagues at the University of Birmingham, other universities or industry. The plan is indicative and is agreed in advance with the supervisor.
Year 2
Deliver the project: collect and analyse data, produce new findings and potentially write scientific papers with the supervisors and collaborating partners.
Year 3
Write the thesis and the associated scientific papers; the writing-up period may be extended.
Entry Requirements
A research proposal is required and is a key part of the application: potential supervisors use it to decide whether they can support the research. It should concisely outline the proposed project, its main research questions and methods, its potential impact and importance, how it relates to current trends in the field, and how it fits the research interests and expertise of the department's staff. Applicants must also meet the University's general entry requirements.
Careers
Whether candidates propose their own research or join an existing project, the PhD develops an independent, critical and creative research mindset and the theoretical and experimental skills of the scientific method, for careers in academia, industry or government. The Careers Network Dubai offers information, advice and guidance to identify options, build skills and reach opportunities.
Accreditation & Professional Recognition
Accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and listed as Active on the Commission for Academic Accreditation register as the Doctor of Philosophy in Artificial Intelligence.
