The Department of Nuclear Engineering is a four-year study that provides students with solid knowledge of nuclear engineering. Students spend the first segment of their study in acquiring skills that serve as the foundation for later courses. In the second segment, students learn the fundamentals of nuclear engineering and gain knowledge in multiple related engineering topics including electronics, materials, and fluid mechanics. In the third and final segment of their study, students take advanced courses in nuclear engineering, undergo an eight-week practical training, and complete senior design projects. The Nuclear Engineering Program is the only program in the UAE that offers a BS degree in nuclear engineering. The program is committed to producing competent and highly skilled engineers who are well-prepared to work in the nuclear engineering field.
A nuclear engineering career offers many potential pathways, including nuclear power and reactor operations (reactor engineering, plant operations, and performance optimization), nuclear safety, regulation, and licensing (safety analysis, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance), radiation protection and health physics (radiation monitoring, environmental protection, and worker safety), nuclear fuel cycle and waste management (fuel design, enrichment, reprocessing, and long-term disposal), research and development (advanced reactors, fusion, modeling, and materials at national laboratories or universities), defense and national security (naval nuclear propulsion, weapons stewardship, and detection systems), medical and industrial applications (medical imaging, cancer therapy, isotope production, and non-destructive testing), and management, consulting, and energy policy roles that build on technical experience to influence strategy, regulation, and public decision-making. - Reactor operations engineering - Nuclear safety analysis - Regulatory compliance & licensing - Radiation protection safety - Health physics applications - Nuclear fuel design - Waste management engineering - Advanced reactor research - Fusion energy research - National laboratory research - Naval nuclear propulsion - Defense systems engineering - Medical physics applications - Isotope production engineering - Energy policy consulting - Engineering management leadership
