About This Programme
4-year BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering covering mass and energy balances, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, chemical reactor theory, process control, gas/liquid separation, and sustainable process design. Lab experiments use industrial software including ASPEN and MATLAB. Year 1: foundation mathematics + science, mass balances, basic thermodynamics, energy balances, professional development (7 mandatory courses). Year 2: fluid mechanics, heat transfer, mass transfer, advanced thermodynamics + mini design project (8 mandatory). Year 3: industrial operations analysis, gas/liquid separation, chemical reactor theory, process control, safety/environment/economics, group project (8 mandatory). Year 4: advanced processing operations, solids processing, energy efficiency, sustainable processes, group design project, individual research project (8 mandatory). Year 1 entry: A-Level CCC; IB 24 (3 HL inc. Math/Chemistry); CBSE 65%; American HS 70% + SAT I 1000; Tawjihiyya 80% (Elite 75%); FBISE 70%; BTEC L3 MMM; Scottish Highers BBBB; French Bac 12/20 + IELTS 6.0; Lebanese Bac 80% or 13/20 + IELTS 6.0; Russian/Kazakhstan Attestat grade 5 + IELTS 6.0. Mandatory subjects: Mathematics + Chemistry. Year 2 advanced entry: A-Level BBC; IB 27; CBSE 85%; HND PPP; BTEC L3 DDD; FBISE 85%; Cert HE C minimum. IELTS 6.0 (no band below 5.5). September intake. Detailed Course Guide Provides opportunities to analyse key operations in industry, in particular the processing and separation of gases and liquids. In parallel, other subjects look at chemical reactor theory, how processes are controlled and the prediction of physical behaviour. Our BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering programme is IChemE accredited to satisfy the academic requirements for registration as an Incorporated Chemical Engineer (IEng) and partially meeting the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered Chemical Engineer. By achieving the IChemE accreditation, Heriot-Watt University has demonstrated that their programmes are academically sound and industrially relevant. All applicants seeking admission must secure equivalency for high school through the UAE Ministry of Education – Higher Education Affairs.
