UAE School Admissions Timeline: Key Dates You Need to Know
From registration windows to entrance assessments, here is your complete timeline for the 2026 to 2027 academic year admissions cycle.
Applying to a school in the UAE is not a single event. It is a six-to-nine-month process with multiple moving parts: registration windows, assessments, interviews, decisions, and fee commitments. If you know the rhythm ahead of time, you can avoid the panic that hits families every autumn when they discover the best schools stopped accepting applications months earlier.
Here is a practical month-by-month guide to the 2026-2027 admissions cycle. The specific dates vary by school, but the phases are broadly similar across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah.
September to October 2025: Research phase
Most families start their research about twelve months before the target start date. This is the time to build a shortlist of five to eight schools based on curriculum, budget, location, and inspection ratings. Attend open days, which are typically held in September and October, and sign up for school newsletters so you do not miss announcements.
Use this period to tour campuses, talk to current parents, and narrow your list. By the end of October you should have three to five schools you are seriously considering.
November 2025: Registration opens
Most British, American, and IB schools in the UAE open their registration windows in early November. This is when you submit the initial application form and pay a non-refundable registration fee (usually between 500 and 2,000 AED per child).
A few points to watch:
- Premium schools often fill popular year groups within days of registration opening. If you have your heart set on a specific school, register the moment the form goes live.
- Registration is not admission. You are simply entering the queue.
- Siblings of existing students almost always get priority.
December 2025: Assessments and interviews
Once you have registered, schools begin their assessment process. For younger children (FS1 to Year 2), this is usually a short informal play-based observation. From Year 3 upwards, expect a written or digital assessment covering English and maths, sometimes with reasoning tests. Secondary applicants may also take subject-specific tests and sit an interview.
Tips for assessments:
- Do not over-prepare young children. The point is to see how they engage naturally.
- For older children, make sure they are rested, fed, and familiar with what to expect.
- Bring all requested documents: passport copies, Emirates ID, previous school reports, and any SEN documentation.
January to February 2026: Offers and waitlists
Most schools issue their first-round decisions in January or February. You will receive one of three outcomes: an offer, a waitlist position, or a decline. Offers usually come with a tight deadline (two to three weeks) to pay a deposit and confirm the place.
If you are waitlisted, stay in regular contact with the admissions office. Waitlist movement is common in spring as families accept offers elsewhere and decline the others.
March 2026: Deposits and settling decisions
By March, most families have accepted an offer and paid the initial deposit (typically 10 per cent of annual tuition, deductible from the first term invoice). This is the point where you are committed.
If you are still weighing two options, be honest with both schools. Holding onto a place you are unlikely to take blocks another family from the waitlist.
April to May 2026: Transition activities
Many schools invite new families to induction sessions, playdates, or parent information evenings. Attend these if you can. They help your child feel familiar with the new environment before the first day and give you a chance to meet other new parents.
This is also the time to organise uniforms, school transport, and any medical or immunisation paperwork the school requires.
June to August 2026: Final preparations
Before the summer break, schools often share welcome packs, class lists, and reading lists. Use the summer to prepare your child emotionally. Younger children benefit from stories about their new school and drive-bys of the campus. Older children appreciate knowing their timetable and, where possible, being introduced to a buddy.
Confirm your first day date and transport arrangements at least a week before the term starts.
September 2026: First day
The UAE academic year typically starts in the first week of September. First days are emotional for everyone. Give yourself extra time, take photos, and do not be surprised if the adjustment takes a few weeks.
What happens if you miss the window?
Life rarely follows a neat timeline. If you are relocating mid-year or joining the UAE late, most schools accept mid-year applications subject to availability. The more flexible you can be on school choice and year group, the easier the process will be. Talem lets you filter by schools with current availability and admissions open status.
Plan early where you can, but do not panic if you are arriving out of cycle. Every year, thousands of families find good schools outside the main admissions window.
